Basketball League Game 5

Finally a win. The team wasn't great, but really it was that we played better. I was my usual self, but with a little more confidence and as always plenty of hustle. Worst part was that I rolled my ankle pretty good near the end.

Score: 53-44 (Win)

Estimated boxscore:
MIN / FGM-A / FTM-A / REB / AST / STL / BLK / TO / PF / PTS
30   /    0-1  /   0-0   /   7   /   0  /   2  /   0   /  0  /  0  /  0

Basketball League Game 4

At least we had a shot in this game. It was close throughout, and they were pretty soft. But alas we could not get the job done. I had a decent night.

Score: 65-54 (Loss)

Estimated boxscore:

Basketball League Game 3

We got destroyed. It was never a game. This team was hitting 3's like they were Ray Allen on crack. It was quite demoralizing.

Score: 93-54 (Loss)

Estimated boxscore:
MIN / FGM-A / FTM-A / REB / AST / STL / BLK / TO / PF / PTS

Basketball 2-on-2

I decided to take a day off Crossfit for a change. It's pretty rare these days, but I actually felt I needed it. To compensate for the feelings of sheer disgust at my laziness, I made sure to play some basketball during lunch.

It was pretty brief and not super intense, but fun nonetheless. Glenn and I schooled a dude we call Stamps and another kid he picked up.

Game 1: Glenn, Arbel def. Stamps, Kid 11-9
Game 2: Glenn, Arbel def. Stamps, Kid 11-5

Basketball League Game 10

It was the last game of the season and it was a win or go home situation. We needed to win as there was a 3 way tie for 3rd place in the league at 5-4. Yes, we were playing the only winless team in the league, but they sure didn't play like it. They were as hungry if not hungrier to get their first win than we were. It was almost like everyone on our team knew we were playing the worst team in the league.
We were losing during the whole game and were down by as many as 12 in the 2nd half. But for some reason, the worst team in the league started to implode. They racked up 2 technicals after sending one of our best players to the line. He ended up making all 6 free throws and we had the ball (only down by 5). Before you know it we were in the lead with a few minutes to go. We went back and forth and eventually secured the win. Now, we're in the playoffs, which start on Friday. The bad news is that I'm not going to be able to play in the playoff game(s). I'm out of town all this weekend. Oh well, at least I helped us get there.

Score: 61-57 (Win)

Estimated boxscore:
MIN / FGM-A / FTM-A / REB / AST / STL / BLK / TO / PF / PTS
30   /    1-1  /   0-1   /   6   /   0  /   0  /   0   /  0  /  3  /  2

Basketball 3-on-3

Played some ball at the park today. There were enough people there that we got some 3 on 3 action. I was teamed up with Glenn both games we played and we handled our competition pretty easily.

Game 1: We def. Them 11-5
Game 2: We def. Them 15-11

I also worked on some more Double Unders as a warm up. Some more improvement, but I'm still not where I was hoping to be for the NLP.

Basketball League Game 9

Another big win. We're one win away from making the playoffs. And the last game is against the worst team in the league. Pretty sure that would be a jinx, except even if we make the playoffs I can't play. Damn bachelor party!

Score: 70-66 (Win)

Estimated boxscore:
MIN / FGM-A / FTM-A / REB / AST / STL / BLK / TO / PF / PTS
25   /    0-2  /   0-0   /   6   /   0  /   1  /   0   /  2  /  3  /  0

Basketball 1-on-1 + 21

Played some ball with Glenn at the park today.

Game 11: Arbel def. Glenn 15-8
Game 12: Arbel def. Glenn 15-8

Season Series (1-on-1): 7-5

And then we played a game of 21 with a dude that rolled up, named E.

Game 4: Arbel, Glenn, E

It was my day. I was nailing 3's like it was going out of style. Got lucky!

Basketball League Game 8

This was probably the biggest win of the season for us. We were playing the same team we played in week 1. We lost to them then and needed to beat them to have any chance of making the playoffs. It was a close game all the way through. We had the lead through most of it, but came close to coughing it up a couple of times. We held on in the end with some good D and rebounds. I didn't have a great game personally, but I did my job.

Score: 57-48 (Win)

Estimated boxscore:
MIN / FGM-A / FTM-A / REB / AST / STL / BLK / TO / PF / PTS
30   /    0-3  /   0-0   /   8   /   0  /   1  /   0   /  0  /  1  /  0

Basketball League Game 7

Another loss, but this one came with some real positive points. We played the best team in the league. They were 6-0 coming in and were undefeated for a reason. They're all pretty big, with the exception being one of their guards who's probably their best player. It's never fun to lose, but when you go down 13-0 minutes into the game and crawl your way back in to make it close (we got within 4 a couple of times), that feels good. And on an individual level, it may have been one of my best games. Not so much in the box score, but in many other ways. I got a bunch of offensive boards (against some big dudes). I was moving to the ball real well, anticipating where it would go. I also was much more aggressive in getting to my spots, boxing out, and as always general hustle. I also felt like I was defending pretty well, which was a tall order with some of those dudes. A loss with subtle overtures of a moral victory. Still a loss though!

Score: 57-44 (Loss)

Estimated boxscore:
MIN / FGM-A / FTM-A / REB / AST / STL / BLK / TO / PF / PTS
30   /    1-3  /   0-0   /   8   /   1  /   0  /   0   /  2  /  1  /  2

Basketball League Game 6

We played pretty shitty as a team, and I was no exception. It was also the least I've ever played, which was a little annoying, but might have been for the best. We came within 8 a few times but couldn't close the gap.

Score: 62-48 (Loss)

Estimated boxscore:
MIN / FGM-A / FTM-A / REB / AST / STL / BLK / TO / PF / PTS
20   /    0-2  /   2-2   /   4   /   1  /   0  /   0   /  0  /  1  /  2

Basketball League Game 5

This was probably our worst showing yet. They had a pretty big guy that I was covering for a good portion of the game. It was kinda fun to get a little rough down there. Dude still scored on me, but I didn't make it very easy.

Score: 77-66 (Loss)

Estimated boxscore:
MIN / FGM-A / FTM-A / REB / AST / STL / BLK / TO / PF / PTS
30   /    1-2  /   0-0   /   6   /   1  /   0  /   1   /  0  /  3  /  2

Basketball League Game 4

Tonight was probably one of our best wins to date. I might just be saying that cause I had a career night. But the team we played also seemed decent. And I'm pretty sure we lost to them at least once last season.

Score: 83-73 (Win)

Estimated boxscore:
MIN / FGM-A / FTM-A / REB / AST / STL / BLK / TO / PF / PTS
30   /    4-5  /   0-0   /   9   /   0  /   0  /   0   /  0  /  1  /  8

Random note: I was grabbing the rim with ease tonight. Seems like crossfitting might be helping my vertical as well.

Basketball League Game 2

This week, we Won, 53-47. And I got some key rebounds at the end to ice it. And that was all after doing Fran a few hours earlier. Funny thing is, not only did I not feel tired, but I actually never got winded. The whole game I was thinking how much easier basketball is than Fran. She is a bitch!

Estimated boxscore:
MIN / FGM-A / FTM-A / REB / AST / STL / BLK / TO / PF / PTS
34  / 0-2    /    1-3    /   8    /   0    /   0   /   1   /   1  /  0 /   1

Basketball 1-on-1

I played some ball with Glenn at the park today. It was fun and I was working on things I need to implement into the League games. I took way fewer shots from long range, and really worked on backing him down. I was also shooting some short range shots. The results were pretty typical. He took 2 of the 3 games...

Glenn def. Arbel 15-10
Arbel def. Glenn 15-10
Glenn def. Arbel 15-10

Basketball League Game 1

The basketball league I play at kicked off tonight. I didn't play all that great in my new Kobes. They actually hurt and cut into my ankle bones a bit. I had one decent rebound where I collected myself and put back a nice shot. Next week will be better!

Estimated boxscore:
MIN / FGM-A / FTM-A / REB / AST / STL / BLK / TO / PF / PTS
30  /    1-5     /    0-0    /   6    /   0    /   0   /    0   /   1  /  0  /   2

Split Jerk

I played some ball at the park with Glenn and Sohrab. Always a decent workout.

CFSB WOD – 11.19.09
Split Jerk 3-3-3-3
AMRAP 15
4 Handstand Push-Ups
6 KB Snatch
8 Body Rows

Split Jerk: 95# x 3 / 95# x 3 / 115# x 3 / 115# x 3
WOD/met-con: 9 rounds + 1 HSP. KB Snatch with 1 pd.

Fran Hurts, Surfing is Fun, Basketball is Over

The day started nice and early with a CFSB workout. A workout that kicked my ass...

CFSB WOD – 11.16.09
Turkish Get-ups 5-5-5 (each arm)
“Fran”
21-15-9 (65#/95#)
Thrusters
Pull-Ups

TGU (6a class did 3-3-3-3-3): 1 pd x 3 / 1.5 pd x 3 / 1.5 pd x 3 / 1.5 pd x 3 / 1.5 pd x 3
Fran: 9:00

I shaved almost a full minute from my Narf time (see South Bay Thriller). I know Narf is harder, but I think doing the Rx'ed 95# barbell with Fran makes a pretty big difference from the 25# dumbbells. And I was much more destroyed after Fran. I don't think I have hurt quite that much since doing that first Tabada with Forrest.

After I was semi-recovered, I was off to have a surf session at El Porto:

I had my last league basketball game for a little while. We finished 5-5 on the season which is, sadly, not good enough to make the playoffs. We only had 5 players most of the game (our 6th got hurt pretty early) so I played a lot! It was probably my best showing to date. I'm hoping to carry it over to next season.

Estimated boxscore:
MIN / FGM-A / FTM-A / REB / AST / STL / BLK / TO / PF / PTS
33  / 2-3    /    0-0    /   4    /   1    /   0   /   0   /   0  /  0 /   4

Cherry Popping

CFSB WOD – 11.9.09
Front Squat 3-3-3-3: 205# x 2,F / 205# x 3 / 215# x 2,F / 205# x 3

21-18-15-12-9-6-3
Kettlebell Swings (1.5 pood)
Box Jumps
Push Ups
Time: 15:27

My workout was the first recorded one at the new location. It's a cool spot in Hermosa Beach. I imagine it will help CFSB grow quite a bit.

I also had my league basketball game. My best guess at my boxscore:
MIN / FGM-A / FTM-A / REB / AST / STL / BLK / TO / PF / PTS
25  / 0-5    /    2-2    /    5   /   0    /   0   /   1   /   0  /  0 /    2

Weak Shoulders

Played some basketball with Glenn at Playa Vista. I was up the whole game and had game point at 20-11, but I let him back in it and he ended up winning 23-21. Sometimes I think I'm a head case.

CFSB WOD – 11.3.09
Shoulder Press 3-3-2-2-1-1: 95# x 3 / 115# x 3 / 115# x 2 / 115# x 1 / 115# x 1 / 125# x F

7 Rounds
3 Thrusters
6 L-Sit or Strict Pull-Ups
9 Push-Ups

Build up to your shoulder press 1 rep max with about 90 seconds rest in between each set. For WOD, you want to go pretty heavy on the thrusters.

Even though I was one of the weakest with the shoulder press, I was doing a pretty heavy thruster at 135#. Pull-ups started as L-Sit, but quickly turned to strict (and occasionally reverse grip).
Time for 7 rounds: 14:22

A Long Day

Started the day with a little Crossfit and finished with some basketball...

CFSB WOD – 11.2.09
Power Clean 3×4: 115# x 4, 155# F, 135# x 4
2K Row for time: 7:02

Men shoot for sub 7:00 minutes and women shoot for sub 8:45 minutes. Pace yourself to make sure you have enough gas for the last 500M.

The row kicked my ass. Shooting for sub 7 means averaging 1:45/500M throughout. That is hard. I think people would find it hard to pull a a 1:45 500, but averaging it over 2K - DAMN! Then again, I was able to manage a 7:02 on my first row for time in a competitive setting. So it's probably good that it was hard as fuck.

After that madness, I went swimming with some sharks. The intent was to go surf at El Porto, but the hundreds of leopard sharks seen below the surface threw my concentration for some reason. Everyone was talking about them in the lineup and you couldn't go more than 5 minutes without seeing 1-10 sharks below you. And they weren't small! Anywhere between 4-10 ft. I wish I was exaggerating. Good session!

And to finish off the day, a basketball league game. It was probably my best game to date. 2 pts, 4 boards, 1 assist and some good things happening that don't show in the boxscore. I felt much more confident in general. Hopefully that will continue through the rest of the season and into the playoffs if we make it.

Poop Basketball

I had another league game last night. I was all fired up and ready to do some damage...

It just didn't work out that way. I was more aggressive, pulling down 3 or 4 boards, and I took 5 or 6 shots too. Unfortunately, I couldn't make a basket to save my life. And it's not like anyone plays defense on me. They pretty much just let me go by. I really need to make them pay for that and take it all the way to the hole. I keep taking these floaters that come close, but no bueno. Next week!
